GENERAL/OPERATIONS MANAGER - PACKAGING

Our client is a leading independent packaging manufacturer, supplying a wide range of markets across the UK. They are currently seeking to appoint a General/Operations Manager to lead operations at one of their sites.

In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of site operations, including production planning and management, safety and regulatory compliance, people leadership, performance management, and staff training and development. You will set the tone for effective, motivational leadership, fostering a positive working environment that promotes employee well-being and high performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with other managers to implement, monitor, and maintain an effective Health & Safety Management System. This includes policies, risk assessments, safe systems of work, audits, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Provide day-to-day support to managers and staff in implementing health and safety activities, and take an active role in auditing and reporting
  • Work with managers to implement, monitor and maintain a Quality Management System that complies with BRC standards, including policies, procedures, audits, training, investigations and continuous improvement
  • Manage site operations and expenditure within the agreed budget, ensuring financial targets and cost controls are achieved
  • Plan staffing and material requirements to meet production demands
  • Coordinate recruitment & procurement processes to ensure adequate resources are set
  • Establish and maintain relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the site, ensuring regular reporting and visibility of performance to staff and management
  • Conduct regular performance and development reviews for all direct reports, setting clear objectives and supporting their growth and contribution to the business
  • Oversee a robust programme of site and facilities maintenance, managing and coordinating suppliers to ensure planned work is delivered effectively
  • Work closely with HR to lead and participate in formal HR procedures, including investigations, disciplinary, capability, grievance and appeal processes
  • Support the implementation of absence management procedures in line with company policy, ensuring accurate record-keeping, timely meetings, and appropriate handling of long-term absences or health concerns
  • Maintain effective communication and consultation channels with employees, including formal consultation with recognised Trade Union representatives on employee terms and conditions
  • Provide support or cover as needed to coordinate transport, logistics and daily production operations
  • Set clear expectations, provide support, and uphold company policies and standards
  • Foster a safe, positive & inclusive work environment that values wellbeing and teamwork
  • Recognise good performance, give constructive feedback and support development
  • Listen to employees ideas, address issues promptly & encourage continuous improvement
