NEW VACANCY! (PK9375)

TRANSPORT MANAGER

WEST MIDLANDS

SALARY £32-35K (Depending on Experience)

HOURS: Monday to Friday - 8am till 5pm with 1hr Lunch Break

Our client is a leading independent corrugated packaging manufacturer, supplying innovative and sustainable packaging solutions to customers across a wide range of market sectors throughout the UK. With a strong reputation for quality, customer service, and manufacturing excellence, the business has continued to invest heavily in its people, facilities, and technology, driving sustained growth and reinforcing its position as one of the UK's most respected corrugated packaging producers.

They are currently looking for a Transport Manager to join their team to oversee the daily management of the company's fleet. You will be responsible for ensuring safe, legal and cost-effective movement of goods and legal accountability for operator licence compliance, driver safety and vehicle maintenance. This role doesn't involve transport planning and route scheduling as they are managed by a dedicated planner.

Experience within the packaging or corrugated industry would be advantageous, although candidates with transport management experience from any other sectors will also be considered.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the company's transport operation complies with all relevant UK transport legislation and DVSA requirements
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of Operator Licence compliance, supporting the Director (who holds the Operator Licence) in ensuring legal obligations are met
  • Monitor driver tachograph records, drivers' hours and Working Time Directive compliance, ensuring legal maximum working hours are adhered to and any infringements are investigated and addressed
  • Ensure all vehicle maintenance schedules, servicing, safety inspections and MOTs are completed on time and to the required standards
  • Maintain accurate records for vehicle maintenance, inspections, MOTs, driver licences, CPC qualifications, medicals and compliance documentation
  • Investigate driver infringements, accidents and incidents, ensuring correct procedures are followed and appropriate corrective action is taken
  • Monitor driver performance and communicate changes in transport legislation, company procedures and best practice
  • Ensure all drivers complete the required inductions and maintain valid CPC qualifications
  • Manage fleet running costs including vehicle maintenance, fuel usage, overtime monitoring and general fleet efficiency
  • Oversee the management of FLT contracts, ensuring on-site FLT training is completed, and maintenance issues are promptly resolved
  • Work collaboratively with the Planning team and Yard Manager to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the transport function
  • Support employee relations by following company policies relating to disciplinary and grievance procedures where required
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role in line with business requirements

Requirements:

  • Previous experience managing a commercial vehicle fleet in a Transport Manager or similar fleet management role
  • Excellent understanding of UK transport legislation, DVSA standards, Working Time Directive regulations, drivers hours and fleet compliance requirements
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle maintenance standards, servicing schedules, MOT requirements and roadworthiness legislation
  • A good understanding of Operator Licence requirements and legal fleet compliance. An Operator CPC qualification is not essential, as the company's Director is the Operator Licence holder
  • Experience managing drivers, addressing performance issues and supporting disciplinary and grievance processes in line with company procedures
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain accurate compliance records identify potential legal or operational risks
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively alongside the Planning team, Yard Manager and wider business
  • Proficient in transport management systems and Microsoft Office
  • Self-motivated, proactive and committed to maintaining high standards of safety, compliance and customer service

This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established and growing manufacturing business where you will play a key role in ensuring the transport operation remains fully compliant, safe and efficient while working as part of a collaborative management team.
